Obama’s Plan to Ease Cuba Travel Restrictions – By Eduardo Calcines

First and foremost, I am a proud American who was born in Cuba in 1955 and lived under the Castro regime until 1969. I have seen firsthand the struggles and anguish the Cuban people experience on a daily basis. In regards to President Obama’s decision to change travel policies or any other policy towards Cuba for that matter, my personal convictions dictate that I firmly stand against any negotiations with the Castro regime until it demonstrates genuine political change towards representative democracy, freedom of speech and respect for human rights.

The decision to allow additional travel to the island prison, thereby further enriching Castro’s oppressive regime with greater resources, is like treating cancer with a Band-Aid. Although noble in spirit, this approach only serves to prolong the misery of the Cuban people.

I say shame on those who place economic gains above human dignity. Consider how the Jewish people would react if such favor was shown to Hitler under the pretense of improving human relations. Hitler was evil and his crimes against humanity were heinous. Castro’s regime and its own crimes against humanity are equally evil. Since 1959, hundreds of thousands of Cubans have died at the government’s hands and over 300 political prisoners of conscience remain brutalized in Cuba’s gulags.

Until we come to terms with the fact that the Castro’s will do ANYTHING to remain in power, many in the free world will continue to show shameful favor towards Cuba and its failed approach to leadership. The Castro brothers are firmly committed to remaining in power and will camouflage their self-serving interests in order to appease the intellectual world at any cost. The Cuban people continually suffer under an abusive and iniquitous regime. If the free world truly wants to improve the lives of the suffering Cuban people, they should look to once and for all free Cuba from the torturing grasp of the Castro brothers.

Let us remember the words of a wise man who said, “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King.

Sincerely,

Eduardo Calcines,
